    Book Description
Since the publication of the first edition of The Handbook of Photonics in 1997 significant growth has taken place in the field of photonics. In the first edition, Professor Mool C. Gupta served as the sole editor in chief. In this new updated second edition, both Professor Gupta and Professor John Ballato have combined their knowledge and experiences to strengthen this handbook. The second edition of the Handbook of Photonics continues to serve as a reference source for introductory material and a collection of published data for research and teaching in this field. The subject of photonics continues to grow rapidly and plays a key role in many segments of industry and academic research. The handbook provides a comprehensive source of information for scientists, engineers and students working in this field, with an extensive list of references for further details.
The book is divided into three general sections, photonic materials, devices, and systems, respectively. An introductory chapter, new to this edition, provides an overview of photonics technology, innovation and economic development. The section devoted to photonic materials contains information pertaining to semiconductors, inorganic and organic materials. The devices section includes information on miniature photovoltaic devices, optoelectronic devices, miniature solid-state lasers, optical modulators, optical fibers, ion-exchanged glass waveguides, design methodologies for guided wave devices, optical and holographic data storage, binary optics, and electronic displays. The photonic systems section contains information on optical communications and digital computing. Although the second edition contains several new chapters, it has not been possible to cover every aspect of photonics in a single volume. We have however tried to cover many of the important areas with the latest information and a large collection of data in a single source.
